Helimeds 🚁🚨
Air Ambulances in the UK are almost entirely (except two helicopters in Scotland) run as charities with no government funding. Each uses a unique Helimed callsign, followed by two numbers. Information about which organisations operate them, their registrations, callsigns and bases is public knowledge, but is spread across many sources. I wanted an overview of all Air Ambulances in the UK, but could not find one, so I have collated the information here.
The data below is collated from a number of sources, including Wikipedia, the websites and social media of each organisation, along with various press releases and news stories.
The data may contain mistakes, but I believe it represents an accurate picture of Air Ambulances in the UK. Corrections, updates and omissions can be sent to helimeds@henryclarke.uk.
The table shows each organisation, helicopter home base, registration, callsign, aircraft type and helicopter operator.
- Some organisations own and operate their helicopters and employ their own pilots. Most outsource this to a specialist aviation company such as Babcock, Castle Air or Gama Aviation.
- Aircraft may change temporarily during maintenance. A replacement aircraft normally uses the callsign of the helicopter it replaces.
- Aircraft types are shown at a general family level to simplify comparisons.
Helimed callsigns may use the following suffixes:
Alpha— time-critical tasking.Echo— a positioning flight.Zulu— training or another non-operational flight.
